ASUN 2020 ACC Honorees Announced

Arkansas State University-Newport is honored to be represented by such distinguished alumni, faculty, staff and students. At the 2020 Arkansas Community Colleges Fall Virtual Conference, four individuals were honored for their success and dedication to ASU-Newport.

Outstanding Alumni: Marcus Simpson

Marcus Simpson

Marcus Simpson is a dedicated public servant. After graduating from ASU-Newport in 2011, Marcus attended the Arkansas Department of Corrections Training Academy where he was named Class Leader. Marcus spent five years working for the ADC and served as captain of the Emergency Response Team. In 2015, Marcus joined the Army National Guard and has since received several military honors, including promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Marcus currently works for Arkansas State Police and plays an active role in the community. He serves as a mentor and frequently volunteers at community events such as “Donuts with Dads” and “Shop with a Cop.”

Academic All-Star: Michael “Austin” Kelso

Michael Austin Kelso

Michael Austin Kelso lives in Trumann, AR, and is active in his church, serving as a teacher for Kids Church. In his spare time, he enjoys online gaming with friends, spending time with friends and family, and watching cooking shows. He states that “The cooking shows piqued my interest in the hospitality industry. I was thrilled to find a high-quality program for hospitality studies at ASU-Newport!” At ASU-Newport, Michael has found a community of support. “I am grateful for ASU-Newport and for the support and wonderful education that was close to home!”

Outstanding Faculty: Dr. Sarah Webb, Associate Professor of Life Science

Dr. Sarah Webb

Dr. Sarah Webb has been a driving force of the Sciences Department since she joined ASU-Newport. Her passion for students is evidenced by the substantial activities she has undertaken to improve their educational experience. Dr. Webb founded a biology research program. She also formed a partnership with A-State that exposes students to research at the university level. She tutors students and provides academic advising year-round. Even when teaching classes online during the summer months, Dr. Webb takes the time to meet students in-person to ensure their success in the classroom and in preparing for the next step in their educational journey.

Outstanding Staff: Sheila McNeal, Academic Coordinator 

Sheila McNeal

Sheila McNeal is the Academic Coordinator for ASU-Newport’s Division of Nursing and Health Professions. She was selected for this honor because she is one of the most upbeat, optimistic, and enthusiastic people on campus. Sheila is a strong leader who keeps her team organized and her division informed. She is patient, kind, and goes out of her way to help others. Sheila is also a founding member of ASUN’s Council on Inclusion and Diversity and spearheaded ASUN’s quarterly diversity and inclusion newsletter. Sheila works hard to make a meaningful difference on campus and in the lives of others and brings joy to everyone she encounters.
