Scholarships

Overview

Scholarships are funds awarded to students based on a talent or skill, financial need, or major area of study and do not have to be repaid. The federal government is the largest source of aid for ASU-Newport students. To explore more Financial Aid, visit finaid.org or fastweb.com.

ASU-Newport Institutional Scholarships

Students will not be required to submit an application for any of the four scholarships listed below.  Awards will be made to first-time college students based on ACT Composite and/or Accuplacer NextGen scores.  

Chancellor's Scholarship

  • Award amount $1500 each semester
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • ACT Composite 25 or higher or Accuplacer NextGen 296-300
    • Must enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester
  • Renewal Requirements
    • Renewable for up to 3 additional semesters upon completion of:
      • 12 credit hours each semester 
      • 3.25 cumulative grade point average

Excellence Scholarship

  • Award amount $1000 each semester
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • ACT Composite 23-24 or Accuplacer NextGen 286-295
    • Must enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester
  • Renewal Requirements
    • Renewable for up to 3 additional semesters upon completion of:
      • 12 credit hours each semester 
      • 3.00 cumulative grade point average

Dean's Scholarship

  • Award amount $750 each semester
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • ACT Composite 21-22 or Accuplacer NextGen 281-285
    • Must enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester
  • Renewal Requirements
    • Renewable for up to 3 additional semesters upon completion of:
      • 12 credit hours each semester
      • 2.75 cumulative grade point average

University Scholarship

  • Award amount $500 each semester
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • ACT Composite 19-20 or Accuplacer NextGen 275-280
    • Must enroll in at least 12 credit hours each semester
  • Renewal Requirements
    • Renewable for up to 3 additional semesters upon completion of:
      • 12 credit hours each semester
      • 2.50 cumulative grade point average

Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship

Assisting students get the education they need for the career they want. Scholarships can be used for personal living expenses, like utilities, gas, and groceries. Scholarships are available to mothers and fathers who are currently enrolled in college.
Eligibility:

  • Resident of Arkansas
  • Single head of household (single, legally separated, divorced, widowed) with sole custody of a child under 18
  • High school graduate or equivalent (may apply if enrolled in college and in the process of obtaining GED diploma)
  • Pursuing a vocationally-oriented undergraduate course of study (full or part-time) to ensure a better standard of living for his/her family. Applicants cannot already have earned an undergraduate degree.
  • A low-income person at or near the poverty level
  • Recipient of a Pell grant or in process of obtaining Pell

Award: Award amounts vary.

FALL:

  • July 15 - Priority deadline. Submit completed application by this date to receive priority consideration.
  • September 15 - Late deadline. May qualify for scholarships if funds are still available.

SPRING:

  • January 15 - Priority deadline. Submit completed application by this date to receive priority consideration.
  • February 15 - Late deadline. May qualify for scholarships if funds are still available.

SUMMER:

  • July 1 - Submit completed application by this date. Priority given to applications submitted early.

Arkansas Education and Training Voucher Program for Foster and Former Foster Youth 

The Arkansas Education and Training Voucher Program for Foster and Former Foster Youth offers funds to foster youth up to age 26 and former foster youth to attend colleges, universities, and vocational training institutions. 
Eligibility: Be a current foster youth or former foster youth attending a college, university, or vocational training institution. 
Award: You can be awarded an ETV grant up to $2,500 each semester (as long as funding is available).

Renewal Requirements: In order to get your second award amount for this academic year, please make sure to complete the Checklist for Re-Determination (ETV Part II) form.  You can get this form from your Transitional Youth Services Coordinator or Family Service Worker, or online. The proper form will need to be completed prior to the beginning of each semester in addition to submitting the required documents listed on the “ETV Checklist”.

NEA Charitable Foundation Scholarships

 

Private Donor Scholarships

Eligibility: The Northeast Arkansas Charitable Foundation administers private donor scholarships for students who are attending ASUN Newport campus. These scholarships are generally awarded annually and priority will be given based on need, specific donor guidelines, and/ or scholastic achievement. We have very generous and wonderful donors who have helped establish a variety of scholarships including the following:

  • FLORENCE MOORE
  • MARY STEENBURGEN

* Many of the scholarships focus on students who are receiving little to no other scholarships or financial aid 
* Several scholarships are for nursing students only
* One scholarship focuses on students interested in English Literature or Drama (students with this interest should state and explain in the essay included with the application)

ASU Foundation Scholarships

Fowler Family Hospitality Scholarship

Background: Each academic year, Arkansas State University-Newport will award 2 scholarships to students in the Hospitality Services Program. The scholarship may be renewable for the length of the program. Scholarships may be in the combination of any of the following degrees:
a. Certificate of Proficiency-Hospitality Services
b. Technical Certificate-Food Service & Management
c. Associate of Applied Science General Technology-Pathway to Food Service & Management

Application Requirement:

  • Applicants must write a 200-word essay about their goals beyond earning their credential(s) from ASU-Newport and how being in the hospitality services program will help them achieve the goals listed. (Note: Include the word count at the bottom of the essay.)
  • Applicants must complete the current year’s FAFSA. (ASUN School Code: 042034)

Award Amount: Award amount covers costs associated with the appropriate degree program.
Renewal Requirements:

  • Students must have a 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and pass 67% of their courses (PACE). 
  • The scholarship is renewable for the length of the program as long as the required cumulative GPA and PACE are met.
  • Academic progress will be verified at the end of each term of enrollment by the ASUN financial aid office.

Other Information: First selection will be given to students who do not receive other forms of financial assistance.

Jane M. Pratt Education Trust Scholarship

Background: The Jane M. Pratt Education Trust Scholarship is awarded to Jackson County residents to further their education. Mr. Bill Pratt along with his late brother, Richard, established the scholarship toward the wishes of their sister, Jane.
Application Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of a Jackson County School
  • Must be enrolled on the ASU – Newport Campus
  • Applicants must have a provable financial need
  • Applicants must have a high school grade average of “C” (2.0 or higher)
  • Applicants shall be considered based on extra-curricular activities in high school and civic, church, charitable areas, etc.

Award Amount: $500.00 per semester
Renewal Requirements: Students must have a 2.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and pass 67% of their courses (PACE).  The scholarship is renewable for one additional semester as long as the required cumulative GPA and PACE are met. Academic progress will be verified at the end of each term of enrollment by the ASUN financial aid office.

David L. & Imogene Garrett Johnston Memorial Scholarship Endowment Scholarship

Background: The David L. & Imogene Garrett Johnston Memorial Scholarship Endowment was created to assist an ASU-Newport (Newport campus) student fulfill their educational goal of becoming a nurse. The scholarship is a one-time award that is awarded on an annual basis.
Application Requirements:

  • Must be a Graduate of a Jackson County School
  • Must be enrolled on the ASU – Newport Campus
  • Must be enrolled in an ASU-Newport Nursing program
  • Students must have a 2.0 cumulative high school grade point average
  • Applicants must complete the current year’s FAFSA. (ASUN School Code: 042034)

Award Amount: $500.00 per semester
Renewal Requirements: The scholarship is a one-time award.

Dr. James and Laura Jane Collier Health Professions Scholarship Application

The Dr. James and Laura Jane Collier Scholarship is a $500.00 renewable scholarship to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport Health Professions student. The scholarship is designed to help meet the educational needs of students who demonstrate financial need.  These funds may be applied toward tuition, fees, testing, and/or books.
Eligibility: 

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50.
  • The applicant must be seeking a degree in the Health Professions Industry.
  • The applicant must be in enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words).

Award Amount: $500.00 per semester
Renewal Requirements: The scholarship is renewable in the amount of $500.00 for one additional semester if the student has maintained a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is enrolled in 6 credit hours.
Other Information: All scholarship awards are contingent on availability of funds. The fund is administered by ASU-Newport

James and Joan Tinsley Scholarship Application 

Background: The James and Joan Tinsley Scholarship is a $500.00 renewable scholarship to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport student. The scholarship is designed to provide aid to students who demonstrate financial need. These funds can be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books. 
Application Requirements: 

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50. 
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • The applicant must possess a positive attitude, strong work ethic and recognizable drive.
  • Significant preference will be given to residents of Swifton, AR. 
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words). SEE BELOW. 

Award Amount: $500.00 per semester
Renewal Requirements: Students must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and pass 67% of their courses (PACE). The scholarship may be renewable for up to three additional semesters if the required GPA and PACE are met. Sydney Sutherland Memorial Scholarship

Background: The Sydney Sutherland Memorial Scholarship is a $500.00 renewable scholarship to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport Health Professions student.
Application Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50.
  • The applicant must be seeking a degree in the Health Professions Industry with a preference given to students seeking a nursing degree.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words).

Award Amount: $500 per semester
Renewal Requirements:The scholarship is renewable in the amount of $500.00 for one additional semester if the student has maintained a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is enrolled in 6 credit hours.

McRaven Education Scholarship

Background: The McRaven Education Scholarship is a $500.00 annual scholarship to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport student seeking a degree in Education. The scholarship is designed to provide aid to students who demonstrate financial need..
Application Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50.
  • The applicant must be seeking a degree in Education.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words).

Award Amount: $500 annually ($250 per semester)
Renewal Requirements: Students must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and pass 67% of their courses (PACE). The scholarship is renewable for one additional semester if the required GPA and PACE are met.  Academic Progress will be verified at the end of each term of enrollment by the ASUN Financial Aid office.
Other Information:

Selections will be made by a scholarship committee consisting of the lead Education faculty member, a representative from Student Affairs and a representative from the Office of Institutional Advancement. The donor will reserve the right to select recipient if they so choose.

H.G. "Gus" Graham Jr. Scholarship

Background: The H.G. “Gus” Graham Jr. Scholarship is $250.00 per semester for a maximum of two semesters to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport Agriculture Technology student graduating from Tuckerman High School.
The scholarship is designed to help meet the educational needs of students who demonstrate financial need. These funds can be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books.
Application Requirement:

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 3.0.
  • The applicant must be seeking a degree in the Agriculture Technology program.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours.
  • The applicant must be a graduate of Tuckerman High School.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words) explaining why agriculture is important, beyond feeding and clothing the planet.

Award Amount: $250.00 per semester for a maximum of two semesters
Renewal Requirements: The scholarship is renewable provided for one additional semester for $250.00 if the awardee maintains a 3.0 overall GPA and has not dropped or failed any classes.
Note: The fund is administered by Arkansas State University - Newport.
Other Information:

  • Scholarships are awarded in the order they are received.
  • All scholarship awards are contingent on the availability of funds.

Marilyn Thompson Opportunity Through Education Scholarship

Background: The Marilyn Thompson Opportunity Through Education Scholarship is a renewable scholarship in the amount of $500.00 per semester, to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport student for up to four (4) semesters. The scholarship is designed to provide aid to students from a minority race or ethnicity who demonstrate financial need. 
Application Requirements:

  • The applicant must represent a minority race or ethnicity.
  • Applicants seeking a degree in STEM and Business fields of study will receive preference.
  • Applicants that have graduated from Newport High School will receive preference.
  • Applicants planning to pursue a Bachelor or higher-level degree will receive preference.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words). 

Award Amount: $500.00 per semester for up to four (4) semesters. 
Other Information: Selections will be made by a scholarship committee consisting of a representative from Student Affairs, a STEM faculty member, a Business faculty member and a representative from the Office of Institutional Advancement. The donor will reserve the right to select recipient if they so choose.

Twyford Family Business Scholarship

Background: The Twyford Family Business Scholarship is a one-time scholarship up to $1,000 to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport student entering the Associate of Business program. Preference may be given to applicants graduating from Jackson County, Arkansas.
The scholarship is designed to provide aid to students who demonstrate financial need. These funds can be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books.
Application Requirement:

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50.
  • The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • The applicant must write an essay (200-250 words).

Award Amount: Up to $1,000
Other Information:

  • All scholarship awards are contingent on the availability of funds.

Farmer's Union Mutual Insurance Scholarship

Farmer’s Union Mutual Insurance is offering a scholarship to be awarded to an Arkansas State University-Newport Agriculture Technology student. The scholarship is designed to help meet the educational needs of students who demonstrate financial need. These funds can be applied toward tuition, fees, and/or books.
Application Requirements:

  • The applicant must have a minimum cumulative high school or college GPA of 2.50.
  • The applicant must be seeking a degree in the Agriculture Technology program.
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a minimum of 15 credit hours. 

Award Amount:  $TBD (4 consecutive semesters or equivalent)
Renewal Requirements:

  • Students must have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and pass 67% of their courses (PACE). The scholarship is renewable for three additional semesters as long as the required cumulative GPA and PACE are met. Academic progress will be verified at the end of each term of enrollment by the ASUN financial aid office.
  • Scholarship recipient must complete at least 15 hours per semester.

Other Information:

Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce - Workforce Development Committee

Background: The Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development Committee will award a scholarship to a graduating high school senior(s) from the Jonesboro region. The awardee(s) will be enrolled at ASUN-Jonesboro with the intention of pursuing a technical certificate in one or more of the three programs listed below, with a goal of working in manufacturing in the Jonesboro area.

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technology
  • Industrial Maintenance
  • Welding

Application Requirements: 

  • Applicants must write a 200-word essay about why they wish to pursue a career in manufacturing, and how earning their credential(s) from ASUN Jonesboro will help them achieve their goals, both short-term and long-term. The essay must also include how the applicant intends to fund his/her education.
  • Applicants must complete the current year’s FAFSA (ASUN School Code: 042034).
  • Applicants must be enrolled at ASUN Jonesboro Campus in one of the technical programs listed above.

The awards will be made each academic year and the opportunity to submit applications will be announced on March 1 on years funding is available.

Award Amount: Award amount will be determined each year according to funding available and will be announced at the onset of the application process. 
Renewal Requirements: The scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships 

Arkansas State University-Newport students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa student honor society are eligible to apply for scholarships offered via the Phi Theta Kappa website.

Arkansas Geographical Critical Needs Minority Teacher Scholarship 

Arkansas Geographical Critical Needs Minority Teacher Scholarships are available for Minorities who will teach in the Delta Region. Applications for the Arkansas Geographical Critical Needs Minority Teacher Scholarship Program are now available for the Fall 2018/Spring 2019 semesters at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and at all two-year and four-year colleges/universities. UAPB administers the scholarship program that was reauthorized by the 84th General Assembly (Act 1746) to address the shortage of public school teachers in the Delta Region, particularly minority teachers. The program awards up to $1,500.00 per academic year (fall and spring semesters) for full-time enrollment and up to $750.00 per academic year for part-time enrollment. Applicants must submit an application, along with all official transcripts to the Arkansas Geographical Critical Needs Minority Teacher Scholarship Program, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Mail Slot - 4986, Pine Bluff, AR 71601. The Arkansas Geographical Critical Needs Minority Teacher Scholarship Funds may be used at any two-year or four-year college or university in the state of Arkansas. 
Eligibility:

  • A Black American, Hispanic American, Asian American or Native American
  • Be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment at ASU-Newport.

Gene Haas Foundation Scholarship

The Arkansas State University-Newport Gene Haas Foundation Scholarship is a grant-funded scholarship designed to assist Advanced Manufacturing students with tuition and fees.

Eligibility: 

  • Enrolled in the following academic programs at ASU-Newport: Advanced Manufacturing.

Award: Varies depending on availability of funds.
Application Due: Ongoing
Renewal Requirements: Not eligible for renewal; one-time award
Other Information:
