Accreditation
What is Accreditation?
Simply put, accreditation is quality assurance. It means that an independent organization has reviewed and verified that our academic programs, professional training, and other services meet established standards of quality.
While accreditation is common among colleges and organizations that provide education and workforce training, it is not limited to the education sector. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and other healthcare organizations also undergo regular accreditation to confirm they meet standards for safety and quality care.
In other words, accreditation acts as a “seal of approval,” assuring students and the public that institutions of higher education are trustworthy, reputable, and committed to delivering high-quality education and training.
Why Does Accreditation Matter?
This seal of approval is more than a label — it has real value for students, employers, and the communities we serve. Accreditation matters because it directly affects students’ education, their financial aid, and their future career opportunities. For employers, accreditation provides confidence that our graduates have received high-quality training aligned with industry expectations.
In addition to assuring quality education and training, accreditation also:
- Supports the transfer of credits. It helps ensure that coursework completed at ASU–Newport is recognized by other colleges and universities — especially important for students who plan to continue their education.
- Allows graduates to pursue licensure and certification. In many fields, students must graduate from an accredited institution to be eligible to sit for required licensure or certification exams.
- Provides access to financial aid. Accreditation is required for students to qualify for federal and state financial aid programs.
- Authorizes the college to grant degrees. Accreditation allows ASU–Newport to operate as a degree-granting institution in the state of Arkansas.
Our Accreditation Status
ASU-Newport is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), an independent accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. HLC accreditation affirms that ASU-Newport meets established standards of quality and allows us to aware degrees and participate in federal financial aid programs.
Whereas institutional accreditation such as HLC accreditation applies to ASU-Newport as a whole and evaluates the overall quality of academic programs, student support services, and institutional operations, ASU-Newport is also accredited by specialized program accreditors. Program accreditation applies to specific academic programs and ensures that these programs meet quality academic, industry, and professional standards.
Together, institutional and program accreditation strengthen the quality and value of our degrees, certificates, and credentials.
