Carnegie Classification
What Does “Opportunity College & University” Mean?
In 2025, the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education (ACE) introduced
a new way to recognize colleges that make a real difference in students’ lives. Arkansas
State University–Newport was named an Opportunity College and University—a designation that highlights both access and student success after graduation.
Why This Matters for Students
Being an Opportunity College means ASU-Newport is committed to:
- Opening doors to higher education for all students
- Supporting students’ success while they are here
- Helping students build a future, with graduates earning strong wages in their chosen fields
In short: ASU-Newport does not just help students get into college—we help students
move forward in life!
How This Recognition Is Determined
This classification looks at two big ideas:
1. Access
Does the college serve a student population that reflects its community, including
students who may not always have had the same opportunities?
2. Earnings
After students leave, are they earning wages that are competitive for the region where
they live and work?
ASU-Newport stands out in both areas—earning the designation of higher access, higher earnings.
A New Way to Measure Student Success
This classification was developed by national higher education leaders to better understand
how colleges support students. It:
- Compares institutions to similar colleges across the country
- Looks at real student outcomes, not just enrollment
- Encourages colleges to keep improving and sharing what works
Our Commitment to Students
At ASU-Newport, this recognition reflects what we strive to do every day:
- Provide affordable, accessible education
- Support students from all backgrounds
- Prepare students for real career opportunities and strong earnings
When students choose ASU-Newport, they are choosing a college focused on their success—both in the classroom and beyond!
