What is the Honors Program?
The ASUN Honors Program gives motivated students opportunities to challenge themselves academically, connect with other honors students, and become involved in their communities. Students participate in small, seminar-style classes, honors contract courses, cultural and academic activities, and community service.
The program is designed to build intellectual curiosity, encourage lifelong learning,
and help students develop the knowledge, leadership skills, and experiences they can
carry beyond ASUN.
Why Join the Honors Program?
Students in the ASUN Honors Program receive opportunities to:
- Earn a $250 scholarship as long as they continue to meet program requirements.
- Take part in research and special projects, including opportunities that may include travel.
- Connect with other honors students through small seminar-style courses and academic activities.
- Participate in Honors Arkansas, which provides opportunities to transfer from ASUN's honors program to the honors program at participating member institutions.
- Be recognized as an honors graduate at commencement, with honors recognition noted on the student's transcript and degree.
Who Can Apply?
Current ASUN Students
Current ASUN students must:
- Complete the Honors Program Application.
- Have completed at least 12 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
- Demonstrate appropriate progress toward completing their degree or credential based on their semester of enrollment.
New or Transfer Students
New and transfer students must:
- Complete an application for admission to ASUN.
- Complete the Honors Program Application.
- Meet one of the following academic qualifications:
- A 3.5 high school GPA.
- A 3.5 GPA in college transfer coursework.
- A 24 ACT score or equivalent placement score, such as Compass or Accuplacer.
Honors Program Requirements
Students must complete the following requirements to graduate from the ASUN Honors Program:
- Introduction to Honors: Complete Introduction to Honors during the semester you are accepted into the program. This course is required to continue in the Honors Program.
- Honors Contract Courses: Complete four Honors Contract courses totaling at least 12 credit hours. In an Honors Contract course, the student works with the instructor to complete additional projects or curriculum-related work for honors credit. The course and additional work must be approved by the instructor in conjunction with the Honors Program and advisory group. Students must earn a grade of B or higher to receive honors credit. A grade of C or lower will earn regular course credit but will not count toward the Honors Program completion requirements.
- Honors Seminars: Complete two required Honors Seminars focused on Leadership and Ethics. One seminar is offered each fall and spring term. Students must also complete two additional Honors Seminars or internships in subject areas related to their course of study.
- Community Service: Complete 80 hours of volunteer service during the two-year Honors Program. Volunteer work must be unpaid and professional or charitable in nature. Service activities may not promote specific political or religious affiliations.
- Capstone Project: Complete a Capstone Project during your graduating term. The capstone should demonstrate the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the
Honors Program. Students must present their capstone project at the end of their graduating
term to be recognized as an honors graduate.
