ASU-Newport Reports Strong Spring Enrollment Growth, Highest Levels in Nearly a Decade

NEWPORT (Ark.) — Arkansas State University–Newport (ASUN) is reporting strong enrollment growth for the Spring 2026 semester, reaching a total of 2,575 students enrolled across both traditional and flex term courses.

According to institutional enrollment data, current spring enrollment levels are the highest ASUN has seen in nearly nine years, continuing a positive upward trend in both headcount and student engagement.

This growth is closely tied to the college’s expanded use of 8-week course formats, which divide the traditional semester into two shorter sessions and provide students with additional opportunities to enroll throughout the term. These flex term courses provide students with more freedom to take courses in a way that better fits their busy schedules.

“At the midpoint of the semester, we are still seeing strong enrollment activity,” said Interim Chancellor Ike Wheeler.  “That continued momentum reflects a model that is working for today’s students.”

ASUN’s 8-week structure allows students to begin classes later in the semester, focus on fewer courses at a time, and maintain steady academic progress. The model has become an increasingly important access point for students balancing college with work and other responsibilities.

Institutional data also shows that enrollment gains are not limited to the start of the semester, with additional students enrolling during the second 8-week term—demonstrating sustained demand for flexible scheduling options.

“As more students look for ways to fit college into their lives, flexibility is becoming essential,” said Dr. Typhanie Myers, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic & Student Affairs. “We’re seeing that reflected in both when students enroll and how they progress through the semester.”

ASUN’s flexible course model continues into the summer term, offering students multiple pathways to stay on track, catch up, or get ahead. Summer sessions are designed for both current ASUN students and visiting students from other colleges looking to earn transferable credits in a shorter timeframe.

With online options, short-term classes, and a streamlined enrollment process, ASUN makes it easy to take the class without the stress. Students can complete key courses in just a few weeks while keeping costs predictable and schedules manageable.
