Arkansas State University-Newport Chancellor Finalists Named

Arkansas State University System President Dr. Charles L. Welch announced today that three finalist candidates have been invited to the ASU – Newport campus to formally interview for the position of chancellor.

The three finalists are:
• Dr. Dale Doty, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, South Carolina;
• Dr. Stephen Vacik, President of Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas;
• Dr. Sandra Massey, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at ASU-Newport.

The invitations to formally interview on campus come after recent meetings Welch conducted with the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee, including Skype interviews with five candidates. The advisory committee, consisting of 11 members representing faculty, staff, students, and community representatives, reviewed 46 applications for the position.

Candidates will interview on campus between Aug. 26- Sept. 5. Doty will interview Aug. 26-28, Vacik will interview Aug. 28-30, and Massey will interview Sept. 3-5. The finalists will meet with the advisory committee, faculty, staff, students, and community members during the interview sessions and will visit the three campus locations in Newport, Jonesboro, and Marked Tree. Individuals attending the interview sessions will have an opportunity to submit feedback regarding each candidate to the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee. Following the final interview, the advisory committee will meet to discuss the candidates and provide feedback to Welch.

Welch has indicated a desire to have a new chancellor named by mid-September. Dr. Larry Williams will retire from the institution on Aug. 31, 2013.

Finalist Backgrounds

Dr. Dale Doty

Dr. Doty has served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florence-Darlington Technical College since 2009. From 2005-2009, he served as Chief Academic Officer of Western Colorado Community College. He also served in multiple roles at North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio from 2001-2005, and was previously the President and CEO of Southern Tool Company in West Monroe, LA.
He received the Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education from Western Illinois University, the Master of Science degree in Student Personnel Services from Western Illinois University, and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Education from Texas A&M University.

Dr. Stephen Vacik

Dr. Vacik has served as President of Colby Community College since 2011. He was previously employed at East Mississippi Community College as Vice President of Instruction from 2008-2011, and as Dean of Academics from 2004-2007. He also served in multiple administrative roles at Bevill State Community College in Fayette, AL.

He received the Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Alabama, the Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Alabama, and the Doctor of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Alabama.

Dr. Sandra Massey

Dr. Massey has served as the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Arkansas State University-Newport since 2011. She was previously employed at Tulsa Community College as Provost of the Northeast Campus from 2005-2010 and as Dean of Student Services from 2003-2005. She also served in multiple administrative roles, including Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, at Oklahoma State University—Okmulgee.

She received the Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Arkansas State University, the Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree from Arkansas State University, and the Doctor of Education degree in Occupational and Adult Education from Oklahoma State University.
