AARP Driver Safety Course to be Held February 23

AARP Driver Safety

Arkansas State University-Newport and the AARP are joining forces again to present a Driver Safety course on the ASU-Newport campus.  The course will be held Friday, February 23 and will run from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Walton Hall, Room 134.  The cost for the course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.  The class is limited to 30 participants and is designed for drivers age 55 and over.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest classroom refresher course directed specifically to the safety needs of motorists aged 50 and older. Drivers with years of experience will be reminded of driving skills and techniques once learned but perhaps forgotten or ignored.  The course will provide new approaches and concepts, including compensating for normal age-related physical changes that may affect the driving ability, such as changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. Also covered are topics such as how medication may affect driving; how to use anti-lock brakes, air bags, and safety belts; when to use a cell phone; what to do if confronted by an aggressive driver; and how to handle problem situations, such as blind spots and heavy traffic.

The program promotes safer driving practices, continued mobility, and a discount in auto insurance from most companies in Arkansas (insurance agents should be consulted for information specific to that company).  No tests will be given and refreshments will be served. All who complete the four-hour course will receive certificates to take to their own insurance companies to request a discount.  Participants will need to bring their drivers’ license and AARP card (if a member) to the class.
