ASU-Newport Secures New Scholarship for Healthcare Students

Nursing students at Arkansas State University-Newport now have another way to help pay for school. ASUN recently announced it had secured a $1,000 scholarship for students enrolled in its Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and/or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs.

At ASU-Newport’s Marked Tree campus, students with a cumulative high school or college grade point average of 2.5 who are enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours and live in Poinsett County, Arkansas are eligible for the Three Rivers Healthcare & Rehabilitation Scholarship. Preference is given to applicants interested in caring for the elderly. All applicants are required to submit a brief summary of their educational plans and goals that includes why they’ve chosen a career path in healthcare.

“This is the very first scholarship that is specific to ASUN at Marked Tree,” said ASUN Advancement Officer Teriann Turner.  “Three Rivers Healthcare & Rehabilitation reached out to us with interest of awarding a scholarship to an eligible student working toward an LPN degree because they witness on a daily basis the importance of healthcare professions.  A positive encounter with a friendly and knowledgeable LPN leaves a significant impact on the lives of those they care for.”

The award, given out once each fall and spring semester, can be applied toward tuition, fees and books, and is designed to help students who demonstrate financial need.

“To no surprise, the cost of college is very expensive, especially if you are planning a career in nursing,” said Advanced Instructor of Nursing Tonya Holden. “In nursing, there are extra expenditures such as special uniforms, shoes and equipment that are required by each student to be compliant with the course policy and procedures.”

Students receiving the Three Rivers Healthcare & Rehabilitation scholarship are eligible to renew their award pending they maintain their GPA and do not drop or fail classes.

“Scholarships like this one help assist students financially along their journey to achieve their educational goals,” said Turner. “This scholarship is a great example of how ASU-Newport partners with industry to ensure student success.”
