Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an interactive 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public important skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
Just as CPR training helps a layperson assist an individual experiencing a cardiac crisis, Mental Health First Aid training helps an individual assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Mental Health First Aiders learn to apply a simple strategy—A.L.G.E.E., in helping someone through a mental health crisis.
-Assess for risk of suicide or harm
-Listen non-judgmentally
-Give reassurance and information
-Encourage appropriate professional help
-Encourage self-help and other support strategies

After the completion of the Mental Health First Aid Course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of common mental health problems.
  • Implement an A.L.G.E.E. action plan with greater confidence.
  • Discuss the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma.
  • Explain the working knowledge of the appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help resources available to help someone with a mental health problem.

A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to each person who successfully attends the entire program.
For rules governing continuing education or contact hour credit, participants should contact their respective regulatory boards.
