Arkansas State University-Newport Career Pathways: Your path to a brighter future


What Is Career Pathways?

A program designed to assist low-income parents complete educational and employment training on their path to a brighter future. Qualified applicants may be eligible for assistance with tuition, fees, books, tutoring, child care, transportation, academic counseling, job search, and other services needed that are not covered by other sources. Applicant benefit awards are made on a case by case basis and many factors must be considered including class schedule. Students must complete the required numbers of hours and be employed during the reimbursement period to receive transportation and/or childcare assistance.

What Programs Are Offered?

Participation opportunities in the ASUN Career Pathways program are available for qualified students at the ASU-Newport campus, ASUN Jonesboro campus and ASUN Marked Tree campus. In addition, participation opportunities in non-credit programs (GED, Employability Skills Training, Academic Skills Training, etc.) are available for qualified students at Career Pathways locations and Adult Education Centers in Craighead, Jackson, and Poinsett counties.

What Does It Take To Qualify?

In order to qualify you must:

check be a resident of Arkansas, and
check have custody of at least one child under the age of 21 years who lives in the home on a permanent basis; and
check either receive Medicaid, Food Stamps, or TEA cash assistance; or have earned at or below 250% of the federal poverty level for 2010

Is It Hard To Apply?

No, the application process takes only a few hours and includes assessments that determine your current educational level and career interests. So, go ahead and set up an appointment to begin your application and bring the following documents with you:
  • 2010 federal tax returns
  • Current letter from DHS, on DHS letterhead, in your name stating all of benefits you currently receive (food stamps, ARKids, Medicaid, TEA)
  • Applicant's Driver's license or Photo ID
  • Applicant's social security card
  • Dependent children's birth certificates and social security cards
